How To Subtitle Videos on an iPod

on Monday, 10 October 2011

You can watch foreign films that require subtitles on your iPod. Although you cannot use subtitles the same way you can when viewing your movies on a computer, you can still embed the subtitles in your videos so that the next time you watch the video on iPod, and you will be able to see the subtitles. Here are some steps for you to be able to add subtitles to videos on an iPod.

  • Get the movie. First of all, you will need to get the movie that you want to place n your iPod. You will need to have it on your computer, so that you can add it to your iTunes library and later on sync it to your iPod. You can actually purchase movies online, or if you have a DVD of a movie that you like, you can copy the contents of the DVD to your computer so that you can play it in your iPod.

  • Download the SRT file. Once you have the movie, you will need to get the corresponding SRT file that goes with the movie. The SRT file is basically the subtitles file that is displayed when you view the movie. There are many places where you can get the SRT files for various types of videos. For instance, you can download them from Subtitles.org, or other websites that focus on subtitles. You can do a Google search as well, to find rare subtitles for independent foreign films. You can also make your own subtitles, by using Notepad and then transcribing the subtitles yourself minute by minute.
  • Convert to MP4. Once you have the videos and the subtitles, you will need to get a movie converter that will allow you to convert the movie file into an MP4. Remember, iTunes and iPod can only process MP4 files. There are many such websites that you can use, such as VSFilter. These can be downloaded for free from the Internet. You can also visit CNET or Download.com to find more alternative software that will allow you to convert your videos. Make sure that you choose a program that will allow you to convert with the subtitles added to the video. There are also some iPod software that are especially made for this job. Make sure that you choose settings that will work for your iPod. After all, iPods have a small screen, so it is best if you lower the resolution for the movie so that it will not take up as much space.
  • Upload on your iPod. Once you have finished converting your movie file to an MP4, play it with an all purpose player such as VLC to determine whether the file conversion went well, and to see whether the subtitles file was embedded in the movie. Once you have checked the file, you can add the movie to your iTunes library, and then sync it to your iPod. Make sure that you check the button for syncing movies to your iPod.

With these steps, you should be able to easily add subtitles to videos and movies so that you can see the subs when you play them in your iPod.
